INTERLINK at Al Yamamah University provides dynamic, stimulating classes in which students participate actively and absorb linguistic, academic and cross-cultural skills through experiential, hands-on activities. Individual needs and progress are carefully monitored and students are assisted in preparing for their specific academic, vocational, or personal goals. The objectives and teaching practices at INTERLINK at Al Yamamah are predicated on an underlying humanistic philosophy. By focusing not on skills alone but on the whole learner, it attempts to create for each student an experience that promotes awareness and self-knowledge. The program’s goal is not so much to dispense information about language as to help students use language and interact with others effectively. It subscribes to the Rogerian thesis that “learning how to learn is more important than being “taught” something from the “superior” vantage point of a teacher…” (H. D. Brown, 1980) as well as to Gattegno’s precept of “the subordination of teaching to learning.” The INTERLINK at Al Yamamah curriculum, refined over the years by its seasoned teacher and instructional management team, provides structure and sets standards for how to help students learn. It defines the linguistic, cross-cultural, and academic skills and competencies that students must acquire to achieve success in their post-orientation program endeavors and describes content, goals, competencies, materials and strategies for each level and class. The combination of general statements on INTERLINK’s philosophy about the nature of learning and teaching, and specific ones about the benchmarks and objectives for each level, serves as a practical guide for helping both teachers and students to achieve the stated goals for the Saudi INTERLINK program.
